Ios Beaches

Ios Island has some of the most spectacular and clean beaches in Greece.

Ios has nearly 75km of beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the coastlines around the island.

In Ios Greece there is a beach to cater for every traveller's needs - from busy to secluded, windy to calm, soft white sand to pebbles, or action-packed water-sports to pure relaxation.

Ios has 3 Blue Flag beaches - Mylopotas, Manganari and Yialos. The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to approximately 3650 beaches and marinas in 46 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean.

Mylopotas

Mylopotas Beach is the most popular beach in Ios, and regularly features in polls as one of the "Top 10 Beaches in Europe".

Mylopotas is a Blue Flag beach which is more than 1km long and very wide, with beautiful golden sand and clean crystal clear water. It has the shape of a horseshoe bay with rocks at either ends of the beach. It is situated about 2km south of Ios chora. There are many chilled-out beach bars, tavernas, restaurants and small shops all the way along the beach.

For the more adventurous, try out the watersports on offer along the beach, go diving, hire a boat, or go kayaking for the day to explore some of the smaller sized beaches not far from Mylopotas.

There are also 2 places to play beach volleyball at either ends of Mylopotas Beach.

How to get to Mylopotas: Mylopotas is just 2,5 km away from Avanti Hotel and the bus station to the beach is located at a distance of only 200 meters away at the main town. (Chora) Buses run to and from the Port, through the main village of Chora to Mylopotas every 15 minutes. It is a short journey lasting 10-15 minutes.

Alternatively you can enjoy the full panoramic view of Mylopotas Beach by walking down the old donkey trail to the beach from the village. It is a 20 minutes walk. The views of the beach along your walk are simply breath-taking, and a great spot for taking some of the best pictures of Ios!

Manganari

Manganari Beach is approximately 23km from the main village in Ios Greece.

Manganari beach is a Blue Flag beach, and the ideal spot if you want a full day in the sun in a relaxing and peaceful environment. It is also very suitable for families with children due to the shallow water.

The beach has not changed over the years, and it is a lovely unspoilt beach.

Manganari was also used as one of the locations for the movie "The Big Blue" in 1988.

There are specific sections of the beach for sunbeds and umbrellas, all of which are situated near the organised watersports. Manganari is a great spot to go windsurfing as it can be quite a windy beach. It is also very easy to find quieter sections of the beach to enjoy away from the organised facilities.

There are a handful of Greek tavernas to enjoy fabulous fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

How to get to Manganari Beach:

By air conditioned bus. There are several daily departures from the Port, Chora or Mylopotas Beach.
By boat. There are daily departures from the Port in the morning.
By hire car / scooter / motorbike. Enjoy the breath-taking views on the way to this fabulous unspoilt beach. From high up on the road you can appreciate the great beauty and size of this stunning beach.

Theodoti

Theodoti Beach is situated to the north part of Ios, about 14km away from Chora. It is one of the quieter beaches on the island, and is a large open sandy horseshoe shaped beach with mountains embracing it at both ends of the beach.

Theodoti Beach has beautiful crystal clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling, and is a great place for relaxing and sunbathing away from the crowds.

You can also see the 16th century Byzantine church of St. Theodoti on the hillside which is one of the oldest on the Island, which gave its name to the entire area. There are also ruins of a Hellenistic tower and an ancient aquaduct at Theodoti.

How to get to Theodoti:

You can get to Theodoti Beach by bus or rental car / scooter.

Valmas

Valmas Beach is a beautiful little cove beach in Ios. It is a small, calm and sheltered beach.

It is famous for snorkeling activities as well.

There are no sunbeds or umbrellas available at Valmas Beach.

There ia also a little Greek taverna at Valmas beach.

How to get to Valmas:

Valmas beach is just a short 15 minute walk from the village of Chora up by the post office road.

Koumbara

Koumbara Beach is a calm beach, located to the north-west of the main Ormos port of Ios. The sand is golden and soft, and there are sunbeds and umbrellas to rent in peak season.

It is a fabulous place to enjoy the sunset at Ios.

Koumbara beach can be reached by bus, on foot or by car / scooter.

Yialos

Yialos (or Gialos) beach is the main beach at the port of Ormos in Ios. It is a popular, spacious and sandy beach, and is about 500m long. Yialos is a great anchorage for cabin cruisers and small yachts, and hence it can get quite busy during peak season in Ios.

From Yialos, you can take a walk to the beautiful church of Ayia Irini. This is a lovely Byzantine church which has two bell towers at each end and two domes, a large one in the middle of the church, and a smaller on over the eastern side of the church. From Ayia Irini you can also walk south to Valmas Beach, where you will find a taverna and a quiet beach.

At the other end of Yialos beach, you can also continue walking to Koumbara beach. There is a wonderful view of the sea and the traditional white houses of the Port along this walk. You can see Sikinos Island in the distance too.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at Yialos beach. There is a row of local tavernas, cafe-bars, small shops and a supermarket nearby. A range of watersports are available on the beach.

How to get to Yialos Beach:

There are buses every 15 minutes from Mylopotas to the Port. Keep walking along by the Port and Yialos is the first beach you can see.

Kolitsani

Kolitsani Beach is a beautiful small quiet beach. It is a small cove on the headland between the port and Mylopotas Beach. It is protected on all sides by rocky hills which makes it the best place to be on a windy day. The water is a clear turquoise blue with pale soft sand. Expect to see sailing yachts anchoring at Kolitsani.

Kolitsani used to be a popular nudist beach.

There are no facilities at Kolitsani beach, so remember to bring food, water and plenty of sun cream if you plan to spend the day there.

How to get to Kolitsani Beach:

The beach can be reached on foot down a steep hill which will take about 20 minutes or so, or alternatively by kayak or boat taxi from Mylopotas Beach

Psathi

Psathi beach lies in the unspoilt valley of Psathi. This beach has fine golden sand flat rocks and stunning deep blue sea. It is a great beach and an ideal place for relaxation in an almost deserted environment.

At Psathi you can also see the church of Ayios Ioannis.

Psathi beach has some nice taverns and rooms and makes a great break away from the village of Chora for a night. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas available on the beach.

Psathi beach is on the way to Agia Theodoti and accessible by car.
